Growing
up is difficult, especially in our culture that is fast-paced and not always family focused. Teenagers struggle to create a sense of self with experiments in independence and new experiences. Unfortunately, social pressure and thrill-seeking often override common sense. During these times, it is very common for parents and families to feel
overwhelmed. My goal is to help you through these challenging times so
that your son or daughter can develop his or her individual identity while still remaining
a part of your family as a whole. I
treat teen problems including family relationships, conduct and behavior issues, anxiety and mood disorders.
The prevailing belief among all psychotherapists, including myself, is that teen issues are best addressed within the context of the family using a Systemic Family Therapy approach. It involves working with all members of the family rather than just the one who is experiencing the symptoms. This means that ideally you, as a parent, will be involved in the process. In addition, other family members may also be participate in at least some of the sessions.
However, in some circumstances, the Systemic approach may not be the most appropriate. In these situations, parents may have more limited involvement and your teen may be treated with individual therapy such as Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (STDP) or Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).
